Pub, Nottingham 1982. Part of the nightlife project but not used in the exhibition.
Nightlife project
For my final year show in 1983 I presented a short 16mm film, a set of colour dreamscape prints and this set of black and white images from my nightlife documentary work taken over the previous year.
This involved visiting the pubs and clubs in Nottingham and recording the goings on. I used a small Kiev rangefinder camera wrapped in black tape and managed to take pictures without being noticed too much. In fact the only time I was beaten up was when I was out without my camera.
I have not yet scanned all the images used, check back later to see more.
Disco at the Arbouretum pub in Nottingham 1982/3
The Arboretum in 1980 was a pub for older people, there was live music from singers in the style of Frank Sinatra and others of that period.
Within a short time it was refitted for the younger crowd. Dress code to get in: no trainers, smart attire.
The atmosphere was intense. Groups of girls, groups of boys. Overcoming the friction with music and alcohol.
The Mill
Venue: The Mill, a Nottingham nightclub near the centre of town. As well as the latest 80s music they had light displays and smoke machines. This image was used in an article in the September 1983 edition of the British Journal of Photography about the final diploma show at Trent Polytechnic.
